Language arts in grade 5 utilizes a workshop approach. Students will immerse themselves in a literature rich environment where they will focus on fiction and non-fiction reading and writing instruction. Students, in addition, will strengthen and develop their word work skills, which includes spelling, vocabulary, and grammar. Listening and speaking skills will also be developed and strengthened.

ReadingThe units of study for reading include - Interpretation Book Clubs: Analyzing Themes, Tackling Complexity: Moving Up Levels of Nonfiction, Argument and Advocacy: Researching Debatable Issues, and Fantasy Book Clubs: The Magic of Themes and Symbols.

WritingThe units of study for writing include – Narrative Craft, The Lens of History: Research Reports, The Research Based Argument Essay, Fantasy: Synthesizing Narrative Skills.

HomeworkTrimester grades will be calculated based upon student progression with and understanding of the skills and aspects of each part of language arts.
